Here are a few diabetic menu tips to help with meal planning.

* A diabetic menu should consist of about 1800 calories a day, with the proportions being approximately 20% fat, 30% protein, and 50% starches.

* Whole grains such as wheat, oats and rye in the form of breads, cereals, rice and pastas, as well as dry beans and starchy vegetables form the base of the diabetic food pyramid and should be central to any diabetic's diet.

* A wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables should be incorporated into a diabetic's diet. Vegetables that are low in starch and high in fiber like spinach and broccoli are encouraged as fiber helps with the digestion process.

* When choosing protein, poultry and fish are preferred over beef which tends to contain more fat.

* When it comes to dairy products, choose non-fat cheeses and yogurt and skimmed milk.

* Meals should be eaten at regular intervals. It is very important not to skip meals or to over eat at meals or snack too much in between in order to maintain the proper blood sugar levels.

* Drink plenty of water and minimize your intake of sodas, alcoholic beverages and other high calorie beverages.

* Limit your sugar intake and desserts

* Eat a wide variety of healthy foods. Phase two is a bit different from phase one because it is at this point that you will start making some choices of your own about what to eat, rather than simply following the food list from the first phase. It also lasts longer than phase one. Once you fully progress into phase two over the course of six weeks, you'll stay with it until you read your weight loss goals before moving on to phase three.

Throughout the first six weeks of the second phase of the South Beach diet, you'll slowly be adding more carbohydrates back into your menu. You will do so gradually though, one week at a time, in order to make sure that you are continuing to lose weight and that you aren't having adverse reactions, such as food cravings, dips in your energy, or weight gain.

So what kind of foods will you be adding to your diet in Phase Two?

Mostly you will be experimenting with low-glycemic starches such as oatmeal, whole grain rice and whole grain bread. Each week you will add an additional carbohydrate to your meal plans. During the first week, you'll select either a starchy carb or a fruit. Make sure it is just one or the other and not both! If you do decide to try the fruit, don't eat it for breakfast as that can lead to spikes in your blood sugar as you will be eating on an empty stomach at that point.

On the second week, it is ideal if you have one of each, making that two carbs, both a starch and a fruit. For your starchy carbohydrate, you'll want to make sure you are still selecting a high fiber choice, so no white breads or rice or anything of that nature. Instead, you will stick to whole grains and fiber rich foods.

Weeks 3 through 6

For weeks three through six on phase 2, you'll continue to add an additional complex carbohydrate to your daily meal plan, however you will want to keep a close watch on your reaction to them. Since everyone's body is completely individual, you may need to stop adding additional carbohydrates at week four due to food cravings or a stall in your weight loss, while someone else can continue to lose weight successfully all the way up to week six, continually adding carbs as they go.

It is basically an experimental process and once you figure out the right number of carbs to add back into your diet, while still continuing to lose weight and hold off the cravings, you'll remain with that choice until you meet your goal weight.

If you haven't started South Beach yet and you're still wondering if it is the right weight loss plan for you, be sure to read my South Beach Diet Review at: http://dietinspector.com/

If you missed it, you can also read my article on South Beach Diet Phase 1 and learn some tips on how to survive it!

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Emma_Martin

South Beach Diet Phase 1 - How to Survive the First Two Weeks

Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet, which lasts two weeks, is pretty similar to the Atkin's Diet "induction" period, which, not so coincidentally, also last two weeks. This is the most stringent aspect of the entire diet plan because you will be removing a lot of things that most people really enjoy eating from your diet.

As part of the publicity for South Beach, they tout that you can lose weight without feeling hungry. With the amount of food that you are allowed to have on the plan during phase one, this is actually pretty true. But hunger and cravings aren't really the same thing. You really are not likely to be hungry, i.e. feeling your stomach growl and holding on by your fingernails until your next meal rolls around. What are you likely to experience though is cravings for the carbs that you've suddenly been weaned off of.

During phase 1 of the South Beach Diet, starchy carbohydrates such as breads, rice and pastas are completely banned from your diet, as well as all of the sugary stuff like ice cream, candy, sodas, etc. While two weeks may feel like a long time to do without any of these foods, if you persevere, most dieters find that the cravings start to subside around the 4th day or so as you get used to not eating those foods. They'll be reintroduced gradually during phase 2.

In order to deal with your cravings during those crucial first few days, it's best to take the bull by the horns. Tell yourself you will not cave! And then, when the craving strikes, get up and do something different to what you are doing at that moment. Get outside and take a quick walk around the block. Go make yourself a tall glass of ice water and drink all of it. Call a friend on the phone just to say hello. Just break what "craving moment" by doing something else and let your mind settle onto a different task.

Another important aspect of phase 1 success is to make sure you go to the grocery store and use your South Beach shopping list before you start phase one. Don't wait until you've already started and then head out to do your grocery shopping. Get stocked up before you begin and don't skip the good stuff - enjoy fine cuts of meat, seafood that you might not normally make part of your regular weekly diet (such as lobster!) and try doing a little experimenting with your vegetables. Find a few recipes for artichokes or spaghetti squash instead of eating salads, spinach and broccoli all the time!

Phase one of the South Beach diet may seem tough at first, but it will get easier.

If you haven't started South Beach yet and you're still wondering if it is the right weight loss plan for you, be sure to read the South Beach Diet Review at: http://dietinspector.com/

If you're ready to Kick-start your Diet in 2008, be sure to sign up for the Weekly Weight Loss Tips [http://dietinspector.com/weekly-weight-loss-tips-newsletter/] newsletter and get your free 8-page Diet Kick-Start Guide.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Emma_Martin

South Beach Diet Or Another Fad Diet? By Rajesh Shetty

I have thoroughly researched this diet and am giving you every detail of south beach diet for information.

South beach diet book is founded on the premise that switching to good carbs stops insulin resistance and curbs appetite which leads to weight loss. Also, good fats protect the heart and prevent hunger.

But this is hardly true as you will learn after reading this article.

South beach diet book offers a simplistic solution to weight loss. All you need to do is eat good carbs like whole grains, vegetables and beans instead of eating bad carbs like sugar white breads and potatoes.

South beach diet says, fast sugars are worst for dieters and slow sugars are good.

And how are these foods classified as fast or slow? The Glycemic Index.

According to south beach diet, the food having a high Glycemic Index causes the blood sugar to spike (go up) immedietly after having the meal, whereas the food with a lower GI does not drastically shoot up the blood sugar levels.

But this theory is only partially true. Yes, the foods with high GI are good for diabetics in helping them to keep their blood sugar levels in check, but contrary to popular belief, the glycemic index of a certain food is not the same.i.e. it depends on how the food is processed, stored, ripened and cooked.

Further, south beach diet is formulated on the premise that good carbs like whole grains have a low glycemic index and bad carbs like sugars, white flour and refined grains have a higher GI.

BUT THE TRUTH IS....

Bread is high GI whether whole wheat or white because it is made from finely ground flour.

Pasta is low GI, whether whole or white(thin languine has a high GI as compared to the thick one)

"Instant white" rice is low GI whereas "Uncle bens converted white" rice is high GI.

Take the case of sugars...Glucose is high GI, Sucrose is medium GI and fructose is low GI

This illustrates that recommending foods based on GI is confusing as well as misleading. On top of it all, there is no research to support the claim that the rise in blood sugar by eating high GI foods leads to high blood insulin levels, and that this leads people to overeat.

To summarise...there is no evidence to suggest that eating low GI foods leads to weight loss.

Now lets have a look at the south beach diet menu.

South beach diet book claims that you won't feel hungry while on this diet. This is impossible considering the fact that some of the menus average only 1200 calories, which is too low not to feel hungry.

The diet encourages you to eat seafood, chicken breast, lean meat, vegetables, whole grains, some fruits, beans, low fat cheese, nuts, oils and whole grains. fatty meats, high fat cheese, refined grains, sweets, juice and potatoes.

The choice of foods in this diet plan are somewhat healthy compared to other leading diet plans like ATKINS but restricting the consumption of carrots, bananas, pineapple and watermelon is the worst part of south beach diet.

The meal plan consists of three phases :

Phase 1 of south beach diet :

You are allowed to eat normal size helpings of chicken, meat, turkey, fish and shellfish, vegetables, eggs, cheese and nuts. You can have three meals per day. Desserts, coffee and tea are also allowed.

But for the first 14 days you are not allowed to eat bread, rice, potatoes, pasta or baked goods and even fruits!

Phase 2 of south beach diet :

You can slowly begin to reintroduce carbs into your diet again. The diet advices you to take all the forbidden foods in phase 1 like bread, pasta, fruits etc. in moderate quantities but at the same time not as much as you were having before.

Phase 3 of south beach diet:

This part is the most relaxed. Dr.Agastson says that you can now forget that you are on a diet. He says that now onwards it is just a healthy lifestyle you are used to, and going to adhere for the rest of your life.

All in all, south beach diet is one more money spinning fad diet for the creator of this weight loss program and a phsychological prop(support) for people who are allways hopping from one diet to the other in search of a hollywood like sexy body.

The initial weight loss caused by this diet is on account of calorie restriction and not because of low Glycemic Index or an invisible switch as Dr. Agastson's marketing language wants you to believe.

Your health could be 100 times better without south beach diet weight loss program,if you choose healthy foods like green vegetables, whole grains, fiber rich foods and vegetables.

And if you are eager to lose those extra pounds, why not do it the most natural way with the weight loss principles of Ayurveda medicinal science?

This is the most effective long term, scientifically proven solution to excess fat.

You can get real cutting edge fat burning secrets of Ayurveda in my Free 5day email ecourse by subscribing to my newsletter at: [http://www.eweightlosstips.com/weightlossltr.htm]

Rajesh Shetty

Expert in weight loss principles of Ayurveda Medical Science and Author of the Best selling book, "Proven weight loss secrets revealed". Starving your body with fewer calories will slow down your metabolism and consequently using up of the calories by the body will also get decreased. This will result in a tired and emaciated body and also the weight loss will not be as much as expected because the calories are still stacked up inside the body.

Following a daily diet of 1200 calories is shown to be nutrition rich to support a healthy body and also brings about the calorie deficit which eventually leads to weight loss. Of course, the actual calories that should be taken depends on a lot of factors such as age, gender, metabolic rate, body size and other medical conditions to name a few. 1200 calorie diet plan fits most of the people on average but it is necessary to confirm with a doctor or dietician before starting with the diet.

How to choose the best 1200 calorie diet menu?

The diet plan should be chosen in such a way that it strikes a proper balance of the macronutrients. The macronutrients include proteins, carbohydrates and fats. The calories that come from the macronutrients should be ideally distributed as follows: 15% of the calories should come from proteins, 55% of the calories should come from carbohydrates, 30% of the calories should come from fats and only less than 10% of the total calories should come from saturated forms of food.

When the diet plan is composed of healthy, nutritious and wholesome food it will keep your food cravings in check and you will feel full for longer. Moreover there will not be any compromise to your health when you follow a diet that satisfies all the above conditions. A diet is followed to make us healthy, supple, strong and slim. Any proper diet should work to achieve all of these. Therefore make sure that you take nutritious food whose calories add up to 1200 or so.

Sample 1200 diet plans:

Below are two diet plans whose total calorific value comes around 1200. From this you can get an idea of how to construct your diet.

Sample 1:

Breakfast

One whole wheat muffin with a spoon of peanut butter and half a banana.

Mid-Morning Snack

An apple and few almonds.

Lunch

2 slices of whole wheat bread; 2 oz. low sodium turkey breast; 1 oz. cheese; a lettuce, an orange, a tomato and a spoon of mustard.

Mid-afternoon snack

8 oz. low fat yoghurt

Dinner

3 oz. skinless grilled, baked or boiled chicken breast.

A cup of cooked broccoli and 2/3 of a cup of brown rice.

Snack

A cup of milk and two fat free fig cookies

Sample 2:

Breakfast

A hard boiled egg, 2 slices of whole wheat bread smeared thinly with butter and a large slice of watermelon.

Lunch

100gms of baked potato and baked beans and 100gms of reduce fat cottage cheese.

Snack

Muesli meal replacement bars.

Dinner

Pasta salad made with olive oil. Wash it down with tinned tuna in brine.

Typically any 1200 calorie diet plan can be broken down into the following proportions: The breakfast is the most important meal of the day and makes up 300 calories of the entire 1200 calories. The mid-morning snack adds up to 100 calories, lunch to 300 calories and the mid-afternoon snack to 50 calories. Finally the dinner contributes to 450 calories of the total. Any nutrition rich diet plan that follows this breakdown can achieve good results in terms of weight loss. Snacks can be taken at any time of the day where you feel the need to snack. But timing is important for breakfast. Make sure that you finish you breakfast within an hour of the time you woke up at. For the rest of the day, timing is up to you and you can divide the calories as you want among the meals, but make sure that the total calories don't exceed 1200.

Last but not least, wash down you meals with lots of water. Adequate amount of water is absolutely essential for maintaining the metabolism and for the healthy functioning of the body. Keeping your body well hydrated is an important factor that constitutes weight loss. Make it as a habit to drink at least eight glasses of water each day. It may look difficult at first, but once you start making conscious efforts it will no longer seem as hard as it was at first.

A word of caution:

Before you kick start on a diet, please catch up with your doctor or dietician and get expert advice on the meal plan that you have formulated. This is especially important for pregnant or breast feeding women. You don't want to follow some diet and weaken you body, so always ask for the doctor's opinions and then jump into your diet plan.

Award Winning 1200 Calorie Custom Diet Plan

If you are serious about losing weight, checkout this award winning 1200 calorie diet plan with huge varieties of menus.
